Newfoundland and Labrador’s rugged coastlines are rich in seafaring history. Long before electricity, motorboats and coast guards, fishermen and sailors relied on lighthouses and their keepers to guide them safe from peril. The Cape Race Lighthouse is located on a remote headland on the southeastern tip of the Avalon Peninsula, its strategic position making it highly visible. It was one of the most powerful ever built. It was designated a National Historic Site in 1974. The lighthouse played a major role in relaying news of the Titanic sinking.
